Horace David Watson was born in Burwell on 10th October 1897 (Newmarket Q4-1897 3B:509), baptised in St. Andrew's Chapel, Burwell on 23rd January 1898, son of James and Sarah Ann WATSON (née BOWERS).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at North Street, Burwell with his father James WATSON [34] farmers son, born Swaffham Prior; his mother Sarah A [34]; brothers Frederick T [14], Leonard L [10]; sisters Daisy L [6] and Ivy S [1]. Except for his father, they were all born in Burwell.

1911 census...Aged 13, he was at North Street, Burwell with his parents (father a labourer at chemical works); brothers Leonard (brick yard labourer) and John [9]; sisters Daisy [7] and Ivy [4]. His mother had borne 10 children but three had died.



He enlisted in Newmarket.
Dying of his wounds it is not possible to say where and when exactly he was wounded. He was at a base hospital and could have been taken there from any battlefield. The 13th Essex spent most of March in the region to the SW of a line between Doullens and Albert.
